Developer Subatomic Studios kicked off the 2008 App Store launch with the outstanding tower defense game, Fieldrunners. Fast forward to 2012, and the studio managed to outdo its original creation with a marvelous sequel
that upped the proverbial ante, thanks to 25 upgradeable weapons,
improved artificial intelligence, trickier maps and beautiful visuals.
We even received Fieldrunners 2 HD for the iPad. Bottom line, you can't
step into 2013 without first playing this outstanding game.
Apparently, a lot of people daydream of being assassins, because Glu Mobile's improved sequel
rocketed up the Modojo traffic charts, and why not? New weapons,
environments (hello, Moscow and Dubai), cover-based mechanics and melee
attacks headline this addictive shooter. The best part? It's free.
Calling Godzilab's creation "Animal Crossing for mobile" is a bit
unfair, since the game doesn't necessarily rip-off Nintendo's
light-hearted sim. Instead of paying off one's mortgage and putting up
wallpaper, Happy Street
tasks users with building their own town, or rather, a city block.
Harvest ingredients to create delicious meals, put up houses for the
game's anthropomorphic residents and do whatever it takes to gather as
many coins as possible. Definitely a great way to pass the time.
One word perfectly describes Madfinger's Dead Trigger:
evolving. When this sweet-looking zombie shooter first debuted, it
suffered from bugs, only a handful of mission types and lacked features
we've come to expect from any FPS, namely aiming down a weapon's sights.
Over the past few months, we received new levels, missions, guns,
bonuses for early adopters and other welcome additions that helped
transform this barebones title into a constant addiction. The fact that
it gives even Xbox games competition in the graphics department shows
how far mobile's come in such a short amount of time.
6. Jurassic Park Builder [Download: iOS]
To be fair, an untold number of games on the App Store play exactly like Jurassic Park Builder,
except none of those titles let players care for hungry dinosaurs. The
team at Ludia did a great job integrating the award-winning license,
adding characters from the original film and a satisfying mix of both
plant and meat eaters. Throw in a wealth of items to help players
customize their own prehistoric paradises, and there's plenty to love.
5. CSR Racing [Download: iOS]
Talk about a surprise. NaturalMotion's drag racing sim
literally came out of nowhere, instantly rocketing up the free charts
to become a smash hit around the world. Perhaps it has more to do with
not being a traditional racer, ditching things like cockpit view and
drifting for making tweaks underneath the hood. Whatever the reason,
people flocked to this free and undeniably pretty game. Bring on CSR
Racing 2.
The original Eternity Warriors was a bit choppy with so much
happening on-screen. Thankfully, Glu Mobile cleaned this up with the
aptly titled Eternity Warriors 2.
Not only does the game run much smoother than its predecessor, but a
plethora of unique dungeons, higher volume of enemies and online
multiplayer helped tick all the right boxes, making this
creature-bashing effort worth a look.
3. Clash of Clans [Download: iOS]
Next up, we have this thoroughly entertaining strategy game
from Supercell, which sends players on quite the engrossing journey, as
they transform their villages into heavily-defended fortresses
populated with dangerous units, with the goal of teaming up with other
users (hence the whole Clans concept) and battling rivals to steal their
precious Victory Points. The new holiday update introduced snow, Santa
Claus and necessary improvements to matchmaking.
2. The Simpsons: Tapped Out [Download: iOS]
EA's The Simpsons: Tapped Out
is both popular and polarizing. Originally released earlier this year,
the company had to pull its licensed world builder due to a series of
game breaking glitches. It would reappear several months later to
critical and mostly commercial acclaim, only to suffer from issues that
resulted in disappearing donuts (one of the game's virtual currencies)
and connection troubles. Despite these roadblocks, players had a blast
creating their own Springfields from the ground up, while exclusive cut
scenes and voice actors from the show helped cement Tapped Out's
authenticity. Arguably the best free-to-play world builder on the App
Store.
Coming in at number one is Gameloft's content-rich arcade racer,
filled with 60 licensed cars, along with some of the finest-looking
tracks spread across a variety of exotic locations, like Hawaii, the
Bahamas and even Iceland, complete with an active volcano. Throw in
six-person online play, matchmaking and plenty of game modes, all for
$0.99, and it's obvious why Asphalt 7: Heat is the best entry in this longstanding series.
